According to the alarming insights from the 2024 Global Report on Food Crises, the plight of hunger has intensified yet again. This past year, an estimated 280 million people in 59 countries and territories have faced acute hunger — marking the fifth consecutive year of increased hunger levels globally.
The report pinpoints a mix of climate and economic shocks as primary culprits, alongside the lingering disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, protracted conflicts in regions such as Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan have severely exacerbated local and regional food crises.
In areas fraught with conflict, the situation is particularly severe. For example, in Gaza, acute food insecurity afflicts approximately 50% of its 2.2 million inhabitants.
In Ukraine, the ongoing Russian invasion has led to widespread destruction of infrastructure, displacement of communities, and significant disruptions in both local and international food supply chains, exacerbating the food crisis not only locally but globally. Ukraine is one of the world's largest agricultural producers. Therefore, the war in Ukraine not only affects its own population with hunger but also significantly impacts global agricultural supplies.
Gian Carlo Cirri, the director of the World Food Programme's office in Geneva, emphasized the urgency of the situation during a recent press conference.
"Immediate enhancement of food supplies is the only way to prevent famine," stated Cirri.
He advocated for quick and substantial increases in food aid to meet immediate needs, stressing the importance of creating conditions that allow humanitarian efforts to proceed unhindered. This includes ensuring safe passage and access for humanitarian staff and supplies, which is crucial in conflict-ridden areas like Gaza and Ukraine, where the normal flow of goods and services is often disrupted.
Cirri also highlighted the dual necessity of addressing both immediate and foundational issues.
"While we focus on rapidly increasing food supplies to address the crisis today, we must also consider rebuilding livelihoods and tackling root causes to prevent future crises," he remarked.
